New metaheuristic approaches for the edge-weighted k-cardinality tree problem

چکیده
In this paper we propose three metaheuristic approaches, namely a Tabu Search, an Evolutionary Computation and an Ant Colony Optimization approach, for the edge-weighted k-cardinality tree (KCT) problem. This problem is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem that generalizes the well-known minimum weight spanning tree problem. Given an edge-weighted graph G = (V; E), it consists of /nding a tree in G with exactly k6 |V | − 1 edges, such that the sum of the weights is minimal. First, we show that our new metaheuristic approaches are competitive by applying them to a set of existing benchmark instances and comparing the results to two di3erent Tabu Search methods from the literature. The results show that these benchmark instances are not challenging enough for our metaheuristics. Therefore, we propose a diverse set of benchmark instances that are characterized by di3erent features such as density and variance in vertex degree. We show that the performance of our metaheuristics depends on the characteristics of the tackled instance, as well as on the cardinality. For example, for low cardinalities the Ant Colony Optimization approach is best, whereas for high cardinalities the Tabu Search approach has advantages. ? 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ant Colony Optimization For The Edge-weighted k-cardinality Tree Problem
In this paper we deal with an NP -hard combinatorial optimization problem, the kcardinality tree problem in edge-weighted graphs. This problem has several applications in practice, which justify the need for eÆcient methods to obtain good solutions. Metaheuristic applications have already been shown to be successful in tackling the kcardinality tree problem in the past. In this paper we propose...
متن کاملCombining Ant Colony Optimization with Dynamic Programming for Solving the k-Cardinality Tree Problem
Research efforts in metaheuristics have shown that an intelligent incorporation of more classical optimization techniques in metaheuristics can be very beneficial. In this paper, we combine the metaheuristic ant colony optimization with dynamic programming for the application to the NP-hard k-cardinality tree problem. Given an undirected graph G with node and/or edge weights, the problem consis...
متن کاملVariable Neighborhood Search for the k-Cardinality Tree
Given an undirected weighted graph G = (V,E) with vertex set V, edge set E and weights wi ∈ R associated to V or to E. Minimum weighted k-Cardinality tree problem (k-CARD for short) consists of finding a subtree of G with exactly k edges whose sum of weights is minimum [4]. There are two versions of this problem: vertex-weighted and edge-weighted, if weights to V or to E are associated, respect...
متن کاملA new hybrid evolutionary algorithm for the k-cardinality tree problem
In recent years it has been shown that an intelligent combination of metaheuristics with other optimization techniques can significantly improve over the application of a pure metaheuristic. In this paper, we combine the evolutionary computation paradigm with dynamic programming for the application to the NP-hard k-cardinality tree problem. Given an undirected graph G with node and edge weights...
متن کاملA Memetic Algorithm for the Minimum Weighted k-Cardinality Tree Subgraph Problem
The minimum weighted k-cardinality tree subgraph problem consists in finding, in a given undirected weighted graph G(V,E,W ), a tree T ⊆ E of k edges having minimal total weight among all of k-trees that are subgraphs of G. We will refer this problem as the Min W-k-Tree. This is combinatorial optimization problem first described by Hamacher, Jörnsten, and Maffioli in [HJM91] who also proved to ...
